La Plata Economic Development Deploys $20,000 through New Internship Fund

Local organizations receive funding for livable-wage internships and to support business capacity.

The La Plata Economic Development Alliance (Alliance) has fully deployed the inaugural round of its Alliance Internship Fund, investing $20,000 to support paid internship opportunities at 10 organizations across La Plata County.

The Alliance awarded funding to organizations representing a diverse cross-section of the regional economy. Awardees include the San Juan Mountain Association, City of Durango Prosperity Office, Farm to Summit, EsoTerra, Center for Rural AI, La Plata County 4-H, Local News Network, Mobile Home Park Network, and SOIL Outdoor Learning Lab.

Internship Fund received 18 applications and the Alliance fully allocated the inaugural round of funding two months after the program’s launch. This strong response demonstrates the continued need to invest in our region’s business community to support a resilient, robust economy.

Building our local talent pipeline in La Plata County means investing in paid internships, providing tailored workforce development trainings, and mentorship, all of which the Alliance is providing through Project RUN. These paid internships are a valuable tool in matching local businesses and talent, and supporting a pathway to a permanent job for the next generation.

The Internship Fund builds on the Alliance’s efforts to support business growth and workforce development. The fund supports positions that provide a livable wage and meaningful work experience. By helping offset internship costs, the program allows organizations to expand their capacity while increasing access to early career opportunities in La Plata County.

To further support career development and connection with business leaders, individuals supported through the fund will present their work at future Alliance Investor Member Meetings or present in front of the Alliance board of directors. Member meeting attendees will hear directly from interns to learn more about the projects and organizations advanced through the Alliance Internship Fund.

Alliance Investor Member meetings are open to the public and take place every second Tuesday of the month from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Fort Lewis College Center for Innovation.
