La Plata Electric Assocation warns of scam: Businesses (and residents) don't fall prey to a phone scam. If you receive a phone call (supposedly from LPEA) claiming your electricity will be cut off unless you pay immediately - it is a scam. LPEA's procedure is to issue multiple mail notices if an account is delinquent. And the co-op does not take payment over the phone (per regulations) and NEVER takes payment through quick-pay debit cards at any retail outlet. If you receive a call claiming your account is delinquent, hang up and call LPEA's Customer Service Department (247.5786) to clarify any billing issues.
